This poem came to my mind a few months ago as I was driving to work. It's taken me a few months to tweak. I hope it's somewhat original or at least touches your heart!
I Don’t Have Time
By Sarah Ries
“I don’t have time for that today,”
An oft repeated phrase I say.
Get ready 1 hour, and the baby that’s 2,
Off to work for 9 more then make dinner for you.
By then the day is mostly through.
And tomorrow the same chores I’ll have to do.
“I don’t have time for fun today.”
An oft repeated phrase I say.
The house is cluttered and the yard’s a mess.
The bills need paid, more or less
The baby’s crying and I really must stress,
That I’d like to attend church tomorrow in a mostly clean dress.
"I don’t have time to talk today,”
An oft repeated phrase I say.
The blog needs blogging, the scrapbook needs scrapping,
Emails need emailing, and facebook needs facing,
I’m so busy, Texting, Posting, Tweeting, and Surfing,
That there’s not much time for really conversing!
“I don’t have time for dumb movies today”
An oft repeated phrase I think to say
To read a book would surely be best
Or spend time with a friend who’s been put to the test
Perhaps a trip to the temple to put my soul at rest
Because if good, better, best is really my quest,
I must get busy doing better and leave out all the rest!
“I don’t have time to serve today,”
An oft repeated phrase I shouldn’t say.
My brain is wore out and I ache a ton.
I’m tired, dinner’s ready and my show’s almost on.
I really need to squeeze in some more time for fun.
But I promise I’ll help when my relaxing is done.
“I don’t have time to sin today,”
An oft repeated phrase I should say.
For there’s much good to do, if I might be so bold,
So many suffering and left out in the cold
And before very long I will be quite old,
For life is short and time is worth more than gold.
And when this earthly journey is through
and to the Judgement seat I climb
I hope I won’t have to look at Him and reply
“cause I just didn’t have enough time.”

Ah, Sarah! Such great words. I can tell a lot of thought was put into that. Admittedly, I say (um...) all of those phrases. I needed the reminder that life has it's seasons, that there need to be good priorities, and that time is short.
THANKS.
You're amazing.
(and, when are we doing lunch again...we HAVE time for that, right!?!)
Sadly - too true. I LOVE the paragraph about no time for real conversing. Well written my friend.
Great poem, Sarah!
Nice poem. I think I really needed that reminder today. Thanks. :)
This poem reminded me of another one by your great-great grandfather, Christopher Gelder. Two great minds, Sarah?? I offer it here as a companion to your beautiful prose:
The Conquest
What shall I do with all the years
Allotted to the Sons of Men?
How shall I count the smiles and tears
If I should reach three score and ten?
What conquest shall my soul engage?
What Deeds recorded in my name
Shall shine upon the written page
Or glitter in the halls of fame?
How shall I spend the months that pass
Unceasing o'er the hills of time?
There is so much to do, alas,
A man might seek a far off clime,
And build a city, conquer tribes,
And reign as Monarch of the Realm;
Might guide a ship, o'er raging tides
And still be master at the helm.
What shall I do with all the Days?
If I could journey with the Sun
Around the World a trail to blaze;
Old friends to greet, or new ones won
Then I might in some humble way
When all my journeys here had passed
Render to God for every day
Some worthy, good account at last.
How shall I spend the Golden Hours?
Methinks the chiming of the gong
Should speak to all my drowsy powers --
That time is moving swift along.
If I would smooth another's way,
Or be a victor over sin:
I must no longer now delay,
I must this very hour begin.
What shall I do as Moments fly?
A moment is so quickly gone,
It scarcely seems worth while to try;
There is so little can be done,
And yet to me it seems quite clear
While yet our earthly race we run,
That oftentimes our battles here
Are in a Moment, lost or won.
Let others seek the Halls of Fame
Or conquer Worlds, if that be right
I would enlist my humble name,
And gird on armor for the fight;
To guard each Moment, Watch and Pray
With all my Heart and Mind and Soul,
That I may have through every day
A satisfying Self-Control.
